But, the dust has settled, I rolled credits on that reveal 5 days ago, and I can reflect on my experience and truly believe in the meaning Kojima was to impart on us as he leaves the series behind. The clues were in front of us the entire time, the ‘horn’, the same voice shared between Boss and the Medic, the words ‘Venom Snake’ and ‘Punished Snake’ in the trailers and the trailers consistently ending with ‘V has come to’Īt first, I thought this reveal was hugely disingenuous and soured what for me was a game lacking any coherent narrative, with too many open threads, which raised more questions than answers. Kojima, as expected, pulled the rug from under our feet, with the final reveal that in fact we were not playing as Big Boss, rather a doppelganger, codenamed Venom Snake, and the medic in the chopper seen in the conclusion to Ground Zeroes. Following Metal Gear Solid V from its unusual, convoluted, Kojima’esq reveal, the Phantom Pain, and to a lesser extent Ground Zeroes, Metal Gear Solid V was looking to be everything I was hoping as the missing link in Big Bosses story prior to Metal Gear 1, the decent into madness and the rise of a villain. If you have finished the game, then sit back as I reel off my thoughts on the conclusion to Hideo Kojima’s epic. if you haven’t, here’s a picture of a dog, and come back later, unless of course you care not for Metal Gear Solid V spoilers, then read on.

If you want more Metal Gear Solid V, you can find the full OST here.Firstly, I will preface this with a massive spoiler warning, DO NOT read ahead if you have yet to finish The Phantom Pain, including its ultimate finale after the ‘Skull Face’ arc. If you want something a little more lighthearted, you can hear the original J-Pop version of “Love Deterrence” from Peace Walker here. Explaining the details would spoil the story of Peace Walker, but let’s just say there’s a good reason why a young woman like Paz would be locked up in a military prison… One of the unlockable songs is this acoustic version of Paz’s character theme, “ Love Deterrence.” She’s one of the prisoners you have to save, and the somber, romantic guitar melody sums up her relationship with Big Boss perfectly. This time, you can listen to different cassette tapes – again, this is 1975 – thus giving your spy mission a little more flavor. The series has always been known for its killer soundtracks, but only a handful of the games let you change the background music during gameplay.

What I enjoyed most, however, was the music. The interactivity with objects and vehicles, the use of lighting and perspective, and the acoustics of the rain and voices are amazing. Despite being a playable preview for the bigger game, Ground Zeroes more than proves its concept you’re allowed to freely explore this massive map, discover its layout, and evade dozens of guards the entire time. It’s set in 1975, and you’re tasked with infiltrating an American black site in Cuba – a not-so-subtle commentary on Guantanamo Bay – and rescuing two of your allies imprisoned inside. Ground Zeroes wasn’t a full game it was essentially an early-release prologue for The Phantom Pain, which came out months later. You might recall that I’m a huge Metal Gear fan, and for good reason the series has some of the best cinematic storytelling and cleverly designed gameplay mechanics in the industry.

The first title on my list was Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes.

I haven’t had much free time to play video games lately, but I’m finally starting to dig into the backlog I’ve accumulated.
